Agape love, from the Greek word ἀγάπη (agápē), refers to the highest form of love described in the Bible. Unlike other types of love—such as philia (friendship) or eros (romantic love)—agape is selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional. It is the kind of love God demonstrates toward humanity and calls believers to practice.

One of the clearest examples of agape is found in John 3:16:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Here, God’s agape is shown through His giving of Jesus for the salvation of sinners. This love is not based on human merit but stems from God’s own character, as 1 John 4:8 declares,

“God is love.”

Agape love is further defined in 1 Corinthians 13, where the Apostle Paul explains that love is patient, kind, and not self-seeking. This passage emphasizes that agape is an active love, not merely a feeling, but a choice to seek the good of others.

Jesus also commands His followers to reflect this love:

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you” (John 13:34).

This agape love is the mark of true discipleship, shown not only toward friends but also enemies (Matthew 5:44). It embodies God’s grace and calls believers to love sacrificially, forgiving others as Christ forgave us.

In summary, agape love is the purest form of love, rooted in God’s own nature. It is unconditional, self-giving, and central to the Christian life, reflecting how believers should love both God and others.
